The Universe: God and the Universe

THE UNIVERSE
S6E7
GOD AND THE UNIVERSE

Excerpts:

... regardless whether or not they believe in God
most scientists agree that cosmic code appears to exist.

"everything in the universe is determined
by the fundamental forces of nature
the strength of those forces are characterised
by numbers called fundamental constants.
they are so sensitive that if they change
by a little bit, the universe as we know it
wouldn't be here."
-Laura Danly

Had it been perfectly smooth then
there wouldn't be any clumpse
which will grab it and form galaxies,
So we needed slight irregularties,
in the distribution of matter in the universe.
Had those irregularties been much smaller,
stars and galaxies would not have formed.
Had they been much larger,
everything would collapsed to form black holes.
-Alex Fillepenko

... but even though the right distribution of matter
through out the universe,
life would still never have formed
without a complex series of processes
isndie stars,
that converted He and H into heavier elements
like C that formed the basis of all living beings.

Had the laws of physics been a little bit different
or even if the physical constants have been little bit diferent
from what they really are,
this process of nuclear fusion and the explosion of stars
might have not been possible.
And we wouldn't be here to discuss it.
-Alex Fillepenko

I don't know single scientist who'll
disagree with the statement that
the World is exceedingly ingenious,
not just mathematical not just beautiful
not just elegant
but the manifestation of something truely
extraordinary.

11 Dimenstions of String Theory

If God or other essential creatures
exist in higher number of dimensions
they might be able to see us
and get very close to us
without our knowing it.

Stphen Hawking said in his book - The Grand Design -
that the latest calculation in Quantum Theory
suggests a universal creator need never have existed.

Stephen Hawking and i said in Grand Design,
that the univese, the galaxy, the solar system, the earth
this rock, that everything came from nothing.
They've been created SPONTANIOUSLY from the Quantum Vacuum.
-lEONARD mLODINOW

But perphaps more impresive question
is whether aliens might be the god
that people have been seeking.

Ultimately the point is
if there is no way to scientifically test
a hypothesis through experiments and observations
it's not truely a scientific hypothesis.
And so since the question of ultimate origin
and ultimate creator is fundamentally an
un-testable question
its real not part of science.
-Alex Fillipenko

Science cannot disprove something
which is beyond our universe
and the reason is
its taking its data
from within the universe itself
its ... ... .. saying
Oh the cartoon character
is going to use data from cartoon
to disprove the cartoonist.

Excerpts:

1- CATASTROPHES THAT CHANGED THE PLANETS
S06E01

10. MERCURY MENTAL DISASTER
... there are some estimates
that upto 16 million billion tons of material
from Mercury landed on Earth.

NASA's Messenger spacecraft is currently orbiting Mercury.

9. SATURN'S SHATTERED MOON

8. THE ORBITAL MAELSTROM
500 million years after the planets formed,
Jupiter elbowed inwards toward the Sun,
While Saturn, Uranus and Neptune drifted outwards.
Jupiter eventually orbited around the Sun
exactly twice for every one time that Saturn did.
This pivotal moment is known as "the two-to-one resonance."

Two to One Resonance is very strong gravitation interaction,
when taken over millions of years,
and having Jupiter and Saturn in a two to one resonance
leads to profound consequences throughout the Solar System.
It shakes the orbits of the other objects up.
It leads to crossing orbits, and it can led to giant impacts.

Neptune and Uranus may have switched orbits,
not once, but several times.

7. THE LATE HEAVY BOMBARDMENT

6. THE MARS MEGA-METEORITE IMPACT

5. THE MARS MAGNETIC DISASTERS

By the time the late heavy bombardment
slowly came to an end
3.8 billion years ago,
every planet in the Solar System
had received some kind of makeover.

4. THE MARS SUPER ERUPTIONS

On Earth, there's plate tectonics.
So, for example, the volcanic islands of Hawaii
are in a chain.
Because the plate is moving north,
the hot spot is relatively fixed,
and new islands keep on poppin up.
But on Mars, its' the same island all the time,
and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

3. THE GREAT VENUS MELTDOWN
Our closest planetary neighbor, Venus,
may have begun quite Earth-like.
It was born at roughly the same time
and made with the same cosmic materials,
but something transformed Venus into Earht's evil twin.

But on Earth, primitive life formed
shortly after the end of the late heavy bombardment.

2. THE SHOEMAKER LEVY 9 IMPACTS
Shoemaker Levy 9, July 1994
Another comet hit Jupter July 2009

If Jupiter was not in our Solar System,
the Earth would be essentially a sitting duck
for all the debris, the comets and the asterouds
that were fallin in towards the Sun.

1. PLANETARY ARMAGEDDON

If Mercury's orbit ever gets to the situation
where it's crossing Venus' orbit,
then basically all hell can break loose.

Scientists have calculated
onf of four disastrous consequences.

Mercury might collide with the Sun.
Might be ejected from the Solar System.
Might smash into Venus.
Or in a worst case scenarion,
Mercury might collide with the Earth.

As faf as we can tell from computer simulations,
there's about a 1% chance
that Mercury's orbit will go haywire.
And withing that 1% chance there's a small probability
that things will unfold.

Mars also faces orbital chaos in the future.
And it, too may slam into the Earth.

And if, as most expect,
the Andromeda galaxy ultimately collides with the Milky Way.
_________________________________________________

2- NEMESIS: THE SUN'S EVIL TWIN
S06E02

"Some scientists suspect that Nemesis is a dark,
still-undiscovered star orbiting our Sun.
And every 26 million years, it triggers a disaster.

The Nemesis theory postulates that there's a star orbiting the Sun
at a 26-million-year period.
-RICHARD MULLER

But in fact, the majority of stars come in pairs.
Probably something like 60, 70% of stars may indeed be
binary, or have even higher nubers of stars in the system.

Nemesis is an extemely dim red dwarf.

Since the birth of the Nemesis hypothesis,
astronomers have been on the lookouit for a
faint red star that periodically disturbs the gravitation of the
Oort Cloud comets.
This sends them on a catastrophic rendezvous with the inner Solar System,
including Earth, every 26 million years.

But as scientists study the Oort Cloud, they have uncovered
unsettling evidence that something disturbing comet orbits right now.

When we look out into the sky, and look at where the comets are coming from,
their directiong tend to concentrate in a certain region of the sky.
And one possible explanation for that is that that skew is being
directed by the gravitational perturbations from an unseen object that is out there.

IN ASTRONOMY, WE FREQUENTLY INFER THE EXISTENCE OF SOMETHING,
NOT BECAUSE WE CAN ACTUALLY SEE IT, BUT BECAUSE
WE CAN SEE THE INFLUENCE IT HAS ON OTHE OBJECTS AROUND IT.
-LAURA DANLY

... scientists have proposed a remarkable theory to explain the congestion in the Oort Cloud.
According to this theory, the culprit disturbing the Oort Cloud isn't Nemesis.
Instead, it's someting equally astounding-- a giant, undiscovered planet,
four times the mass of Jupiter.
In short, the largest planet in the Solar System.
Scientists have proposed naming it TYCHE.
(1 millon orbit)

In 2003, astronomer Mike Brown made an historic discovery when
he found something floating around the night sky ghe could'nt explain.
...
What he stumble upon turned out to be a planetoid just smaller than our moon,
now named SEDNA.
But Sedna presents a scientific quandary.
At it nearest point, Sedna lies about three times farther away from the Sun than Pluto,
in a region whwere astronomers never expected to find planetary bodies.

It's important to realise thise is not just an abstract discussion.
Clearly these objects colliding with Earth happen very rarely.
But on the other hand, when they do collide, they're extremely cataclysmic.
So what we need to be able to do is get better understanding of
our Solar System, and keep an eye on the sky, because it may be crucial for oure survival.
-CLIFFORD JOHNSON

_________________________________________________

3- HOW THE SOLARY SYSTEM WAS MADE
S06E03

The first stages of our Solar System's creation
are hardly unique.
Today we witness the same thing happening in the Orion constellation.

As gravity draws in the cloud's gas,
the cloud not only spins faster, it invevitably flatens into a disc.

When you look at the Solar System today, the sun is 99.85% of the total mass.

Asteroid, and Kuiper Belts
... Now, they were never able to coalasce to form a planet
because there's just not enough of them close enough together.

50 million years after the Solar System was born
both the Kuiper and the Asteroid belts have 100 times more objects in then than they do today.

The innter planets take as much as 10 times longer
to form than the giant planets outside the snow-line.

THEIA, protoplanet, Earth's sister.
collide, moon formed

At 500 milion years old, all the Solary System's planets have been formed.

When a planet ejects a planetesimal, the planet itself
has to move in a little bit,
and that's simple conservation of energy.
It's giving a lot of energy to the planetesimal,
dumping it way out there.
That means it, the planet, has to move in.
It losses energy.
If an orbiting object loses energy, it's not moving as quickly.
That means it drops to a lower orbit.

METEORITE NWA2364
In early 2011, cosmochemists in a similar lab at Arizona State University
dated part of a north African meteorite to an incredibly accurate 4.5682
billion years old,
the oldest material ever found on earth, older than the planet itself.

DAWN will orbit Vesta (2nd largest asteroid in SS) for a year before going
on to spend another year orbiting the larged asteroid, Ceres.

Our Solar System, however, has its planets in near-circular orbits,
spread out in a stable arrangement that seems almost too ferfect.

_________________________________________________

4- THE MOON
S06E04

Neptune claims 13 of them.
Saturn has 48.
Jupiter hosts an astounding 62.

The mean distance from Earth to the Moon is 234,000 miles.
3 day flight.
Diameter roughly 1 quarter to the size of earth, (2160 miles)
Single day on the moon  equivalant to 27.3 Earth days
This is because one side of the moon permanently faces us.
Luna is phase-locked with our planet.

And so the Moon has played an imprtant role in the stability
of our axis of rotation, of our planet and therefore in our climate.

In 1873 Frec scientist, Edouard Roche
proposed that the Moon simply formed alongside the Earth
out of essentially the same nebular cloud of particles and gasses.
But this idea had a fundamenta weakness.
The Moon has a much lower iron content that the Earth.
It's much less dense.

In 1878,George Darwin announced his fission theory of lunar origin.

The logical conclusion for Darwin
was that a protion of the molten rapidly spinning Earth
must have separated from the main mass and spun off to become our Moon.

In 1909, Thomas Jefferson Jackson See
"THE CAPTURE THEORY"

Essentially See theorized that the Moon had actually formed
in a different part of the solar system from the Earth,
that it orbited the Sun just like the other planets.
But that at some point it had moved too close to Earth
and was captured by Earth's gravity.

If the Moon formed elsewhere its composition could be very different.
On the other hand the notion that Earth's gravity could capture and retain
such a large object was unlikely,
since there is no obvious resisting medium
to slow down an object as big as the Moon.

All three theories had significant weaknesses.
The origin of the Moon remained a mystery.

THE GIANT IMPACT THEORY.
[Bill Harmann, 1974]

The basic idea is that about 4.5 billion years ago
Earth collided with an object roughly the size of the current planet Mars.

Its very large collision. And it s started the Earth spinning.
It's what gave us our current 24 hours day we believe.
And this collision was so massive
that it launched material into orbit around the Earth.
And it's from that material that we believe the Moon later coalesced.

________________________________________________

 5- CRASH LANDING ON MARS
S06E05

But, in fact, Mars' atmosphere
is 95% Carbon Dioxide and as thin
as Earth's atmosphere at 100,000 feet.

Earth and Mars is between 35 million and 240 million miles.
So the time lag between "how are you?" and "I'm fine."can be
between about 6 and 44 minutes.
That's for a complete exchange.
So if there's an emergency,
it can't be dealt with in real time.

But Mars lost its magnetic field 4 billion years ago.

THE UNIVERSE (Season 4)

THE UNIVERSE
Season 4
History Channel

EXCERPTS:

________________________________________
 Episode 1 - DEATH STARS

DEATH STAR
 WR104
Constellation Sagitarius
8000 light years.

When the death star called WR104
finally explode,
it has the potential to unleash deadly gamma-ray-burst (GRB)
directly at Earth.
Its believed the star is roughly 8000 light years away  from us.

Further examinations suggest
the rotation axis of the dust bloom
appears to match to the rotatin axis of Wolf Ray Star (WR104) itself.
Means the Earth is staring directly down the barrel of a gun.
That means that if this star becomes the gamma ray burst when it blows up
one of the two gets will be pointing towards us.

The beautiful spiral of WRA104 is suddenly a messanger of doom.

The flash we would see, if WR104 went off, be much brighter than the sun.

This Death Star is ticking time bomb.
Scientist know it for sure it will go for supernova.

Stars are primarily made of Hydrogen and Helium,
but heavier more complex elements are created
every time a star explodes.
Elements like Carbon, Nitrogen and Oxygen
then they become the raw material
for the next generation of stars.
So a star born today has a more heavy elements
also known as higher metalicity
than the star born earlier in the history of universe.

Gamma-Ray-Burst emitting by two colliding neutron stars
may be short, but its powerful,
equal to the energy release by sun over its entire lifetime in less than 2 seconds.
The worry for us
at least two dozen of pairs orbiting neutron stars exist in the Milky Way.

I think we are safe from the danger of the normal supernovae.
In the case of gamma ray bursts, we are not so sure.
-ALEX FILIPPENKO

Star Eta Carina
supermasive star,
100 times bigger and million times more luminous than the sun.

We think its goint to turn into black hole sometime between now and next million years.
Unlike the WR104 Eta Carina does not have its cross ears.
We know the rotation of Eta Carina is not pointed to Earth.
When it happens the explosion will likely be
the brightest supernova ever witnessed by mankind.

BETELGEUSE
Located in the Orion constellation
500 light years away.
20 times the mass of the sun.

People have been noticing that the Betelgeuse
had been changing a lot over the last decades.
Its actually shrunk considerably about 15%.

Death Stars take life but it also the origin of life.

- LISA KEWLEY

________________________________________

Episode 2 - THE DAY THE MOON WAS GONE

Most critically,
The collision knocks the Earth
onto its current axial tilt
of 23.5 degrees.
And speeds up its rotation
from eight hours
to just five hours.
Within a year, the moon forms
roughly 14,000 miles away from Earth.
Significantly closer than its current distance
of 234,000 miles.

Without the moon
... In particular, humans might well never have come into existence.

Even though today's earth
is stabilized by the moon,
there is still a wobble
to the earth's rotation
known as Precession.

________________________________________

Episode 3 - IT FELL FROM SPACE

When the asteroids hit the Earth's atmosphere
they become meteors - bright fire balls in the sky,
if they make it to the groud they're called meteorites.

Only 170 impact craters are still visible on Earth.

65 million years ago, an asteroid the sie of mount Everest,
stuck the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.
with the energy of 100 million megaton bomb.
It created a 100 mile wide crater under water,
that was finally discovered in the 1980s.

13,000 years ago, the climate changed suddenly and rapidly and dramatically,
It looks like there are some type of extraterrestrial event
whether it was a large meteorite and asteroid or comet
exploring in the atmosphere.
(suddenly disappearing of mega mammels)

________________________________________

Episode 4 - BIGGEST BLASTS

The largest bomb ever exploded on Earth
was 50 megatons.

10. Chicxulub Impact
Mexico Yucatan Peninsula
65 million years ago.
asteroid, size of mount Everest.

9. Maritian Impact
200 times larger than Yucatan Peninsula asteroid.
1200 miles wide. size of pluto
3.9 billion years ago.

8. The Big Splat
aka. Giant Impactor Theory
4.6 billion years ago.
Theia -- got in earth core
Earth's matter produced Moon.

7. Planets collide
size Earth and Venus
300 light-years away.
BD+20-3-07,
constellation Aries.

6. Megnetars Flares
"Megnetars are repidly spinning neutron stars
which forms when stars several times larger than our sun
begin to die and collapse upon themselves.
"and one megnetar flare in particular
was strong enogh to blind satellites orbiting earth
from 50,000 light-years away."
Blast in 2004, Known as SGR-1806-20.
Constellation Sagittarius.
It was the brightest blast ever seen from the object
outside our solar system, and yet, it was 50000 light years away.

5. The 100 Million Years Blast
2.6 billion light years away.
Super massive black hole.
MSA 735,

4. Short Gamma-Ray Bursts
2005, binary neutron stars.
GRB-050509b,
2.2 billion light-years away.

3. Supernova
SN 2005-AP,
4.7 billion light years away.

2. Long Gamma Ray Bursts
2008
scientists detect strongest gamma ray burst on recored.
GRB 080916c.
it lasted 23 minutes.

1. Bing Bang
Went Whoosh!
it just expanded so quickly,
doubled in size many times over a very very short interval of time.
This incredible inflationary exponential stat of expansion
lasted only a tiny fraction of a second,
a millionth of a millionth of a millionth of a millionth of a millionth of a millionth of a second.
1/1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
it expanded so quickly, that it was the faster of light.
Thats ok, that doesn't violate the Einstein's Theory of Relativity.
Space itself can expand faster than the speed of light.
No particle can travel through space  faster than the speed of light.
But space itself can and does expand faster than the speed of light.

Episode 5 - THE HUNT FOR RINGED PLANETS

The four outer planets in our solar system
are all encircle by rings.
some dazzling, Saturn
some dusty/smoky, Jupiter
some remarkably faint, Uranus
some half (arch type), Neptune

Sun has Rings
Asteroid Belt, Kuiper Belt

Our planet has a new ring
it is only 50 years old,
Its not made of dust or icy rocks,
But metals and silicon.
ITS A RING OF SATELLITES.

Comprised some 400 satellites. (year 2010)

________________________________________

Episode 6 - 10 WAYS TO DESTROY THE EARTH

10 Ways to Destroy the Earth

10. SMACKDOWN FROM SPACE

The Dino Dooming asteroid was little bigger than the Mount Everest.
"We need something atleast half the size of Earth, and one tenth its massive,
heading for us at 30m/sec." to doom the Earth.

Lets try Mars
"But Earth is so big, 6 billion trillion tons of rock and metal, that even a direct collision of Mars, will leave the planet itself damaged but essentially intacted."

We need destroying the Earth something bigger, like our sister planet Venus

Mercury had elliptical orbit.
such changes in mercury orbit can also indirectly effect the orbit of other planets.
and particular mars can take on a trajactory that could someday intersect the Earth.

9. THE BIG FREEZE
(moving away from the Sun)

8.  THE BIG BURN
(moving close to Sun)
temp. 900 degrees F. (480 degrees C)

7. STOPPING THE SPIN

"The Earth is moving about the 1000 miles/hour,
and if you suddently stop, the atmosphere wouldn't necessarily stop with it,
and instantaly you have a 1000 miles hour wind everywhen on the planet at once.
... rocks and buildings melting ... day half a year long and night half a year long.

6. TORN BETWEEN TWO BLACK HOLES

5. DEVOURED FROM WITHIN
miniature blackhole, of mass of Earth, size half inch.

4. TURN OFF THE GRAVITY

"Human bodies will remain intacted, because they are held together by electromagnetic forces, not gravity. but everybody on earth will fly up, to suffocate in space."

sun galaxies planets everything will be drifting apart.

3. ANTI-MATTER ANNIHILATION

"basically this is Einstein's E=mc2 in action,
you take this matter and antimatter and combine together,
and release pure energy.
just one pound of antimatter annihilating one pound of matter
,
would pack 44 megaton of explosive punch. as much force as thermo nuclear bomb.

To destroy the Earth you need 100 trillion tons of antimatter.

Solar flares produce about 1kg of anti-matter.
"when enough magnetic energy, builds up the nuclear furnace of the sun,
it release and explosive solar flare, a big flare can generate as much as 2 pound of antimatter.

2. TRANSFORMED BY STRANGE MATTER
up, down, strange quarks

"even when you look at subatomic level
just at the nucleus, there is a well defined structure,
we can tell a protons and neutrons etectra,
but if you lost that structure, then matter will lost the shape that we know of.

1. WHEN PARALLEL WORLDS COLLIDE
It'll not be the end of earth or sun only, it'll be end of galaxies, universe.

________________________________________

Episode 7 - THE SEARCH FOR COSMIC CLUSTERS

If the NEBULAS are stellar nurseries for cosmos
then the CLUSTERS are thier grade schools.

ARCHES CLUSTER
25 thousand light years from Earth.
100 light years from the Milky Way core.

But we didn't know
Up until few years ago,
How masive star could actually be,

what we saw in the arches
is the collection of MANY MANY low massive stars,
not so many may be hundreds of medium size stars,
and then a dozen or so very massive stars with 130 times massive than sun in them,
beyond that its nothing. Its like falling off a cliff.
If stars is more massive  than about 130 solar masses can form and live then there would be no any Arches.
So apparently nature place a limit on maximum massive star it is probably somewhere between 130 and 150 solar masses.

These students need to work
300 years non stop
to do what
a super computer can do
in one second.

________________________________________

Episode 8 - SPACE WARS

Because satellites are already essential to fight wars on Earth.
America in particular is extremely dependent on space.
Our Military cannot operate the way it does today
without satellites.
We use it for communication, navigation, intelligence gathering about all kinds,
whether it is photo intelligence, whether it is signal intelligence,
lot of its done by satellites.
Even ground maneuvers required GPS satellites.

Since 2007, China and the US have proven
they are capable of destroying satellites in low-earth orbit with missiles.

If we were start losing satellites,
What would happen to daily life.
Suddenly ATM machines don't work,
Many cellphones don't work,
(Pay It the Pumps) Petrol pumps don't work,
Financial transactions all over the world use GPS timing signal, all of the sudden disrupted.
So the whole world slows down.

ATOMIC BOMB IN SPACE
EMP (electromagnetic pulse)

________________________________________

Episode 9 - LIQUID UNIVERSE

Liquids only make up a tiny fraction of all matter.
Most universe consists of gas... or solid.

Only in certain specila locations
where temperatures and pressures are just right
do you get liquids.

TITAN's LIQUID

In Solid
molecules are not moving around very much.
They are not allowed to move much at all.

In Gas
atoms or molecules move faster, far from one another.

But in Liquid
atoms or molecules are somewhat constrained
by their neighbours.
They might pass eachother up a little bit.
But they tend to flow together.
When sheep are in a flock,
kind of constrained
by the herders and flowing along
from one place to another,
that can be thought of as a liquid.
They can pass eachother up a little bit,
but they're basically not wandering too far away
from their neares neighbours.
They are all going together, they are all going with the flow,
So to speak.

"The Earth has N and O and the Titan has N and CH4.
so the Nitrogen (atomic no "7", mass 14) is the dominant gas in the atmosphere."

Titan is our sister world.
Oxygen would be a dangerous explosive gas on Titan,
because its surrounded by methane.
The same way that methane is a dangerous explosive gas
on Earth, becuase we're surrounded by oxgen.

Season is 7 years long at Titan.
4 seasons at Titan take 30 years.

JUPITER's LIQUID

So when you take the glass of water into space.
Its not the temperature
its the low pressure
that allows all the molecules
to fly away.
And the turn the glass of water into a gas.

The reverse occures (in high pressre) as in Jupiter.
H turns into liquid.

Inside Jupiters liquid hyrdogen ocean
it's over 17,000 degress,
hotter than the surface of the sun.

NEUTRON STAR
SUPER FLUID

BROWN DWARS
IRON RAIN

BROWN DWARS (failed stars)
These objects are so hot that brown dwarf clouds ...
are made of gaseous IRON VAPORS.
In the interous of brown dwarf
where pressure is are sufficiently high
the gaseous iron can condense into a liquid
and can actually RAINED DOWN,
as LIQUID DROPLETS OF IRON.

Fortunately we don't have iron rain here on earth,
But if we were to have it, it wouldn't be pleasant at all.

GLIESE 581 D
water or gas ?! jury is out.
Solid Water - ICE-7

Ice-1: that one that you and me are actually used to.

The difference between anything like ice-1,
2,3,4,5,6,7,
we think it goes to 10,
but it couldn't go any further
is actually the pressure.

EUROPA (Jupiter's Moon)

Episode 11 - SCIENCE FICTION, SCIENCE FACT

TRANSPORTER

"The amount of energy required to turn a human into pure energy
would be far more than in the most powerful nuclear weapons,
that humans have ever made.
The process itself would be destructive.

To convert someone of my size entirely to energy.
would be the equivalent 41 times the energy release
of the largest nuclear weapon
ever exploded on planet earth.
Keven Grazier

"If you're gonna say that
you're disassembled atom by atom,
converted into an energy stream,
and resembled to someplace else.
I don't see how that's anything
other than KILLING you
and RESURRECTING you.

"The informating created

would generate billions of terabytes.

One person would take roughly terabyte drives'
worth of storage to fill 500 million
Empire state buildings.

Einstein called it:
"Spooky Action At a Distance."

This is about the single freakiest thing
to come out of quantum mechanics.
There's no way for the informationg to travel
from the one particle to the other.
You can separte them by so much that even the speed of light
doesn't allow the information to get from one point
to the other when you make the measurement.

TERRAFORMING

SHIPS TO THE STARS

"Only light - Photons with no mass -
can go at the speed of light.
But anything that hass mass
would require an infinite amount of energy
to get going that fast.
It can't be done, Its impossible."

WARP DRIVE
A scientist named, Miguel Alcubierre came up
with a theoretical notin
for a warp drive
that would involve
EXPANDING SPACE behind your starship
and CONTRACTING it in front of your starship.

Ion Drives

CALLING OUT

ALIEN INVASIONS

"... And we understand that fairly well.
What would broadcast our existence to the rest of the universe
is our radio emissions.
And we've really been broadcasting in any reasonable amount
since about the 1920s.
So that means that our emissions, which radiate outwards
at the speed of light, have reached about 90 light-years.
So we have a sphere of 90 light years of radius
of planets and stars, civilizations that could detect us.
That's noty very bit, our galaxy is 100,000 light years
from end to end. so if there were hundreds, thousands of civilizations out there,
it might be that only one or two have been able to detect us in the time of broadcasting.

Frank Drake, launched the SETI program.

Episode 12 - EXTREME ENERGY

Extreme Energy

Energy can neither be created nor destroyed,
it can only be transformed from one type to another.

Everything in our universe is energy.
You're energy, Trees are enrgy, the dirt is energy
and even the empty space b/w the stars is energy.

All energy ultimately comes from the Big Bang.

When two cars crash, they get energy from motion,
mothin get energy from fuel, fuel gets energy from plants life,
plants get energy from sun, sun get energy from nucelar reactions (fusion),
"those nuclear reactions get thier energy from the particles that were created
at the time of big bang."

Transformation is the key to how energy works.
The universe is filled with many forms of energy.
Light, Sound, Thermal, and Chemical.
Most common among them is Potential Energy, and Kinetic Energy.

Even the human body is a fine-tuned,
energy-tranforming machine.
[eat food (energy), work burns it]

E=mc2
Einstein came up with a way
to explain that everything in this univers is energy.
Matter is energy.
If you weigh, say, 100 kg,
that's your mass.
and if you take that and
multiply that by the speed of light
and then multiply that by the speed of light.
Then you get the amount of energy
that exist within your body.
Actually about a thousand times more energy
is in your body than there was
in the larget nuclear weapon detonated by mankind.

POWER
"The objects may have the same amount of energy
but that does not mean they have the same amount of power.
The key ingrediant is how quickly the energy is released."

Power is equal to energy per unit time.
... this cupcake, would have the equivalend energy
of about a million tons of TNT.
We all know that the cupcakes don't spontaneously explode
and emit a million tons of TNT.
If i eat a cupcake, it only gives about 200 calories of energy
OVER SEVERAL HOURS.
Whereas if i have a stick of dynamite.
That same amount of energy would be released in
say, A MILLIONTH OF A SECOND.
So the TNT has much more power even though it has the same amount of energy."

Nuclear Fusion within stars
like our sun then produces
a form of energy called
Electromagnetic radiation.
These are oscillating waves of photons.
or particles of light.

On Earth and in space,
Electromagnetic radiation
consists of a spectrum of energy.
On the low end are radio waves with low frequencies and very long wave lengths,
on the high end of the electromagnetic spectrum
are gammarasy with high frequencies and extremely short wavelengths.

Radio - Microwave - Infrared - Visible - Ultraviolet - X-ray - Gamma-ray

Each photon of electromagnetic radiation
takes upto 150,000 years
to actual get from the center of the sun
to the surface,
before it cane escape and head towards earth.

Gammarasy, xrays and ultravioled is blocked by Earth's atmosphere,
but it allows visible light and infrared  and radio waves.
"Light and infrared energies are absorbed by landmasses and oceans
and then converted to heat energy."

Non-renewable energy
burning fossil fuels,
we don't mean that energy
is gone form the universe.
what we mean is that that energy source
has been transformed into a form
that's no longer useful,
like waste heat.

Supernovas are one of the most explosive transformers of energy
in space.
However, 99% of the energy released during a supernova
is converted into strage ghostly particles, not visible, called neutrinos.
Neutrinos are nearly mass-less energetic particles
that move at almost the speed of light
and pass through matter virtually undisturbed.
Every second, more than 50 trillion solar neutrinos
pass through the human body, withous us knowing it.

Detecting the Neutrions
Hida, Japan, 3000 feet underground,
Super-K Observatory, massive stainless steel tank
containing ultra-pure water.

Only 3% of sun's energy in the form of neutrinos

Massive Black Holes = 10 billion Stars, packed in very tine space.

Cosmic Rays
coming out of space all the time, collide with atmosphere.

These cosmic rays could cut off your cell phone conversations.
they can effect electronics.

Geo-Thermal energy

Ring-of-fine, tectoic plate
which circles the Pacific Ocean

Wind Energy

"the universe is accelarating apar, it's not only expanding, but it's actually accelerating."
DARK ENERGY,
75% of universe.

... with time,
there's more and more dark energy in the universe.
Thus, accelerating, speeding up its expansion.

The Universe: Dark Future of the Sun

The Universe : DARK FUTURE OF THE SUN
History Channel
Season. 5 Episode. 8 (Final)

http://www.history.com/shows/the-universe

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Universe_%28TV_series%29

EXCERPTS:
Dark Future of the Sun

"Over 1 million Earths can easily fit inside this gargantuan ball
of bubbling gas."

93 million miles away from Eath.

Core Temp. 30 million degrees Fahrenheit.

Here, H nuclei combine to form He nuclei.
This process called fusion
gives off radiant energy.

The Sun is actually White star, not yellow.

Our Sun will continue to churn out energy
over its entire lifetime,
which is estimated to be around 12 billion years.
(Sun is now 4.5 billion years old)

In one billion years
our star's luminosity
will be 10% greater
and the temperature of our planet
will be 100 degrees hotter.

GLOBAL WARMING
"The moisture in the air
is very good at trapping
infrared radiation or heat.
And so it's sort of like
putting a blanket on the Earth.
Now, here is the bad part.
As the Earth warms up,
the oceans evaporate even more,
which trap more heat
and so teh Earth warms up more.
And the Earth warms up more, again,
we trap more heat, and the effect run away.
This is what we call
The Greenhouse Effect.

Venus is 30% closer to the Sun than Earth is.
But its temp is more than 800.

When Sun is 10 billin years old,
it'll run out of hydrogen in its core.
Its the beginnig of the end of our sun,
and it'll not die peacfully.

Average star like our sun
will spend final 2 billion years of its life as a Red Giant.

Earth's future is uncertain
becaust it lies on the borderline
between being engulfed and surviving.

At the Lawrence Livmore National Labortary
in northern California,
Scientists are taking on
the challenge by attempting to create
a MINIATURE MAN-MADE STAR.

When the sun eventually cools off so much,
you won't even be able to see it with you eyes.
And so that's why some people call it a Black Dwarf
or a Dark Star.
It'll just be invisible, sitting there in space nearly forever.

The Universe: Total Eclipse

The Universe : TOTAL ECLIPSE
History Channel
Season. 5 Episode.7

http://www.history.com/shows/the-universe

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Universe_%28TV_series%29

EXCERPTS:
TOTAL ECLIPSE

"Total eclipse of the Sun
can be seen somewhere on Earth
an average of once every 16 months.

PENUMBRA
UMBRA

Only planets without eclipses
are Mercury and Venus
because they have no moons.

Eclipse on here on Earth are no other.
Cosmic Proportions
The Sun is about 400 times bigger than moon
But the sun also happens to be about 400 times farther away
from the Earth than the moon.
What that means is that
both the Sun and the Moon appear to be
almost exactly the same size in the sky.
Their sizes in the sky is crucial for eclipses.

EINSTEIN G. RELATIVITY
CURVE IN SPACE
"In 1915, Einstein published his predictions
that gravity causes space to curve,
and the light from stars would bend following that curve.

So if there were a star close to the Sun in the sky,
Its light would be bent by the Sun's gravity (curve).

The only way to test Einstein's prediction
was during an eclipse,
when the sun was darkened.
and the nearby stars were visible.

Eddington knew the accurate position of a star
that should have been blocked by the Sun
But if the Sun's gravity bent the star's light,
as Einstein said,
It would be seen in a different position altogether.

SOLAR CORONA
Without the occurance of total solar eclipses
It's really questionable today whether we actually even know
that the Sun had a corona -
an outer, hot, tenous atmosphere.

CHRONOGRAPHS
for Artificial Eclipses

KEPLER spacecraft
"In the beginning
In January 2010
the Kepler team announced
the discovery of the mission's
first five planets.
Four are gas giants like Jupiter, (Kepler 5b, Kepler 6b, Kepler 7b, Kepler 8b,)
the fifth the size of Neptune, (Kepler 4b)
Kepler saw their transit many times in first week,
it means they orbit their stars in a matter of days,
eclipsing their stars each time.

It means they are 10 times closer than the Mercury to our Sun.

Kepler is going to determine (in next 6 years)
if Earth-like planets
are common or rare,
and the answer either way
is going to be very interesting.

The Universe: Asteroid Attack

The Universe : ASTEROID ATTACK
History Channel
Season. 5 Episode. 6

http://www.history.com/shows/the-universe

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Universe_%28TV_series%29

EXCERPTS:

ASTEROID ATTACK

APOPHIS,
will pass close by 2029,
if it hits the KEYHOLE,
a region in space of one mile wide
then it will hit Earth in 2036.

Apohis was discovered in 2004.
1 in 250,000, possibility to impact on Earth.

Objects that are one km or 2/3 of a mile in diameter or larger,
we think there's about 940 of those, and we've discovered 86% of the population.
If you move to smaller objects,
say 100 meters and larger,
we think there's about 50,000
of those and we've discovered 10%.
And if you move to smaller still objects, 30 meter
and larger-sized objects we think there's about
2 million of those objects and we've discovered much less than 1%.

Now, down here, we've got a basketball-sized rock.
On average, about two of these slam into the Earth's atmosphere
EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Next is the small car-sized object.
This happens about ONCE EVERY TWO WEEKS.
But even something this big is probably gonna burn up completely
before reaching the Earth's surface.

For a typical object hitting the Earth's atmosphere,
it needs to be at least 100 feet in diameter.

But according to recently uncovered fossil records,
the-one-mile-wide Chesapeake bay asteroid
didn't seem to have the same globar effects as the
massive extinctions triggered by the
6-mile asteroid that killed the dinosaurs.

2001, NASA's "NEAR" landed asteroid Eros.
"The NEAR spacecraft even transmitted information back to Earth
for about two weeks while on the surface.
But it has lost its radio link with teh Earth.
and so now, it's simply sitting there, mute for million of years."

"The asteroid explorer Hayabusa, of the
Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)
recently one-upped NEAR.
It's the first spacecraft to ever land on an asteroid
and then return to earth.
It arrived in June 2010 after a four billion mile round trip.

DAWN
DAWN will arrive at 3200-mile-wide Vesta in 2011,
orbit for a year, then reach 600-mile-wide Ceres in 2015.

Asteroids are trackable, because they are close (Near Earth Objects).
Comets come from farther space, and they are not visible until they are 6 months away from Earth. so we have little time to react.

WISE (Wide field Infrared Survey Explorer)
2009 launched
WISE has already found 25,000 asteroids and more than a dozen comets
that were too dark to find using visible light.

EXCERPTS:

On Dec. 14, 2009
a Delta II rocket delivered a small package into orbit
300 miles above the Earth
its called WISE.
And its creating the detailed infrared photograph
of the universe to date.

WISE's 4-million-pixel telescope
can only photograph infrared images
if the telescope is colder than the objects it searches for.

CASSINI

TITAN
Thick atmosphere
Hydrocarbons, methan, ethane...
Liquid Methane
Huygens Probe

"The history begins in the 1960s
with NASA's first attempts
to reach Earth's nearest neighbors.

"And our first six Rangers missed the Moon eniterely.
But we learned quickly."

1962, American probe, Mariner 2
is the first spacecraft to fly past Venus.

But in 1970, the first probe to land on the planet
isn't American, but Soviet.
The Venera

The Temp. is about 860 degrees F.
Boiling point is 212
and lead melts at a temp. slightly lower that 860.
so you'd have molten lead on the surface of Venus.

The technique is called Gravity Assist,
a virtual engine that harnesses the immense gravity
of planetary bodies
to assist a spacecraft on a planned trajectory.

THE ION ENGINE
for out of solar system.

Currently, the European Space Agency's Mars Express probe
holds the Earth-to-Mars speed title at six months

An Ion Engine could cut the travel time to Mars
down to just a mere few weeks.
Five weeks to Mars is only the beginning.

In 1995, in the Pegasus constellation,
just 50 light years from Earth,
scientists discovered the first true extrasolar planet,
51 Pegasi B

In the last decade or so
astronomers have been extremely lucky
to find 100s of planets around the other stars.

But the planets we've been finding are the large ones:
the Jupiters, the Saturns, some Neptunes.
We have not been able to find the Earth-like planets,
if they are out there.

Kepler mission
to find exoplanets
using 95-megapixel camera

Feb, 11, 2010,
A high tech solar probe arrives in space, locked and loaded.
its mission: watch the Sun, 24/7, in high definition color.
SDO

Scheduled for launch in 2015,
Solar Probe Plus will fly directly into the Sun's 2-million-degree corona
and survive.

Solar Probe Plus will get very close to the Sun,
within 8 or 9 solar radii from the Sun.
Now, for comparison, the Earth is 200 solar radii from the center of the Sun.

Solar corona: Though farther from the Sun's core,
it's actually hotter than the Sun's surface.

The Solar corona is very hot, millions of degrees of temp.
So you might think that if you were immersed in the corona,
you would get burned.
But there are so few particles
that the total amount of energy being transferred to a body
is less than the amount of energy being radiated.
SO, IN FACT, YOU WOULD FREEZE
if you were immersed in the solar corona.
as long as you had a good heat shield protecting you from the disk of the Sun.

The Universe: Time Travel

The Universe : TIME TRAVEL
History Channel
Season. 5 Episode. 4

http://www.history.com/shows/the-universe

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Universe_%28TV_series%29

EXCERPTS:
TIME TRAVEL

"Time always go one way Forward.
Physicists call this Arrow of Time.

Cream mixes in the coffee,
it doesn't un-mix,
that's the arrow of time"

"All things in universe move
from ORDERLY STATES to
DISORDERLY STATS."

SPACETIME
"This means that whenever space warped,
so is time."

GRAND FATHER PARADOX.

"Physicists have come up with
at least 3 ways that nature might act
to prevent time travel paradoxes.
The first is simple: Nature prevents paradoxes
by making time travel into the past impossible.
In other words, it can't be done.

MULTIPLE UNIVERSES

You cannot change the past.

"We think that nature always somehow manages
to choose the solution that provides
self-consistency.
In other words,
You always get a solution
That does not produce a paradox."

"But we don't have to worry about about paradoxes
when we travel forward.
Taking the arrow of time into the future.

"The faster you move in space
time for you slows down
as compared to people standing still." -Einstein

Its proven by experiments.
The effect is called Time Dilation.

Russian cosmonaut,
Sergei Krikalev has logged
more than 803 days in orbit,
traveling 17,000 miles an hour,
making him the world's record holder
in time travel.

He is a 50th of a second slower
in the amount of time that has passed for him
compared to everyone else who's stayed on Earth.

To move 500 years into the future [Earth Time = 500 years]
You'd have to move at 99.99% of the speed of light for 7 years. [Space time = 7 years]

There no law of physics that says you can't go close
to the speed of light,
but your rocketship becomes hevier and heavier
as you go closer and closer to light speed.
So you require more and more fuel
to accelerate you smaller and smaller amounts,
and you need MORE THAN INFINITE AMOUNT OF ENERGY
TO ACTUALLY BREAK THE BARRIER OF LIGHT-SPEED.

Einstein's theory of relativity
says high gravity
also slows down your clock.

The Large Hadron Collider

is the largest, most complicated machine
ever created by humankind.

The Collider went operational
in Nov 2009,
And as scientists ramped up the power
the energy in its collisions
was increased almost tenfold
by March 2010,
And it will double that sometimes after
2013.

Today's theories of Space, Time, Gravity and Quantum Physics
are still incomplete.

And tools like LHC will help fill in the ever puzzling blanks.

WARP DRIVE
If we can expand at will,
we may be able to propel
a warp ship.
We make space Expand behind the ship
and make it Contract in front.
The wave of warped space
moves through the universe
FASTER THAN LIGHT,
while inside the so called warp bubble,
the ship is a passenger,
never violating Einsteins rule
against exceeding the speed of ligth.
