The Story of God 3/3

The Story of God
Documentary, Part 3. host: Lord Robert Winston

THE GOD OF THE GAPS

Excerpts:

God Particle

Miracles

Dr Dr. Duncan MacDougall
wanted to find out if soul is material or in-material
he wanted it to weigh.
He took 6 patients dying of tuberculosis
and put them on special weighing bed
and wighed them for last 3 hours of their life
as they were dying.
And what he noticed was, as they expect*,
each one lost weight, on average 21 grams.
.. and concluded therefore that the weights of human soul
was 21 grams.

What he then did, he did the same experiments with dogs,
... when they died, he weighed them, what he found was
that unlike the humans the dogs did'nt lose weight.
So he concluded the Humans have a soul dogs don't.

Pascal, Principles of Uncertainity.
His conclusion became knows as the Pascal's Weigher
it is entirely rational argument for taking an irrational leap of faith.

It is NOT CERTAIN that EVERTHING is CERTAIN.

Galileo Galilie vs Bible

But the idea the science could describe the universe
better than scripture, was harder to suppressed.
By the time Galileo dided,
educated people were turning to scientists not priests for answers.

But nowa days the Vatican even has its own astronomy.

CERTAINITY is science's Original Sin.

A science expanded, God retreated,
He became the God of the gaps,
occupying those parts of the universe,
that are unexplored and unexplained
the science don't get around to yet.

Then in the middle of the 19th century along
came Charles Darwin with his theory of evolution,
and the God pushed so far back that for many people
He disappeared from the map altogether.

Noah's Flood = 4500 years ago.

According to a recent poll
45% of Americans believe that
the Genesis says one thing and
science textbooks say another,
Genesis must be right.

Galileo must be spinning in his grave.

God Gene (VMAT2)
According to Dean our capacity to know God is genetically determined.

Meseum of Creation, Kentucky

Arch
74 ft wide 450 ft long boat.

In America today
Science and God seems to be on collision course.

Perhaps the scientists can take confronts from the words of Sir Isaac Newton
who was a man of God as well as a man of science,
He said this,
"It seems to me as I am like a child
playing on the beach by the the sea
of the vast ocean of truth lies unexplored
before me."

Excerpts:

CAVES - First churches of humans.

"Awareness of death is another by-product of our consciousness."

"One of the mankind's fundamental religious beliefs
is that everything shares a common soul
animals, trees, even the rocks.
Humans also share this soul,
but somewhere along the line we lost
the contact with devine spark within.

"Farming hasn't just given us food,
it may also given us the building block
of organised religion."

The farmers relationship with nature is more complicated
than hunters. And so is the relationship with gods.
The hunter prays for the luck of day's hunt,
but farmers is in a long hold, untile the harvest is safely gathered in,
...
Farming forges a long term contact,
between men and the gods.
PRAY NOW EAT LATER.

Aztec were giving human sacrifices, by taking his heart out alive.
"But human sacrifices are common in many religions."

The Aztec's practices human sacrifice almost at industrial scale.

HINDU

The asnwer to that question takes you to fascinationg paradox
that lies into the very heart of Hinduism,

the more gods you have,
the less they acutally mean.

According to some hindu traditions
the total number of gods is
330 million.
The number is so vast, its almost impossible to grasp,
which is the whole point.

Like the sun reflecting the countless glimps of lights from the surface of the sea.
One extreme of hindu thought even argues that
human soul and Barhaman are the same.
and ultimate religious truth is this, we are all gods.

BUDDHA

"The Buddha didn't denied the existance of gods
he just thought they are irrelavant to the problems of humanity
trapped in the wheel of life."

"To be FREE from the PASSIONS is the most excellent WAY." Buddha

"(Buddha) he concluded this, all creation is trapped in the wheel of life
a life means suffering, in-escapeable suffering, and thanks to reincarnation
endlessly repeated suffering.
But the gods were no real help, they too were trapped in the weheel of life.
and so it is upto every individual to achieve Nirvana - the ultimate reality.

LIFE IS SUFFERING
DESIRE CAUSES SUFFERING
NIRVANA OFFERS AN END TO SUFFERING
IT IS POSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE NIRVANA BY FOLLOWIN THE BUDDHA'S WAY.

When Enlighted died, he never born agian, end of suffering.

ZOROASTRIAN
Iran

When Zoroastrian died, they could not be buried or comitted,
as this could defy the sacred elements of earth and fire,
so they left the dead in hill toping enclosre called
Tsar of Silence.

Zorostrain in Iran don't expose their dead anymore.
Islam insists its own rules on how the dead should be treated.

Zoroastra taught that
the life is preparation for death.
a bliefe that become the corner stone
of many monotheistic religions.
One God, One Life, One Judgement Day.

River Why

THE RIVER WHY
Movie, 2010

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1241329/

Excerpts:

Gus: You believe that stuff?

Titus: I'am not sane, Gus.
I believe in the rivers of living water.
I believe our should swim in that water.
I believe that Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, Mohammad are the savor in that water.

Gus: Wish I believed that.

Titus: And why don't you?

Gus: Bait or fly.
Fried or scrambled.
Jesus or Mohammad.
I mean, does it really make any difference?
Does it really matter?
Where are all these sages and buddhas holing up...
now when we really need 'em?

Titus: Well, would you know one if you met one?

Come on, Titus.
Even Izaak Walton talks about the goodness..
of the God of nature.
I've never seen Him, and I've fished in ten states.
Whoever, whatever, wherever He is or isn't..
if He really wants me to notice Him
maybe He should stop being so scarce.

All right. Why can't a duffer like me catch a fish?
Isn't the answer obvious?
Isn't it because at my present level of skill
the fish would have to be so damn dumb
and utterly unelusive as to be not worth catching?
And how much more elusive...
should a thing as wondrous as a soul be?
Fisherman should be the easiest of men to convince...
to search for their souls,
because fishing is nothing but...
the pursuit of the elusive.
How can you be so patient in searching for fish...
and so hasty to write off your soul...
because you can't see it.

You can't keep a person
in a place he doesn't want to be.
-- No, but can't you at least make it a place
-- that they might wanna visit?

Run Like I'm a River...

EXCERPTS:

Quantum theory claims that every single point in space,
even empty space, can contain information.

This means the information in the micro-tubules
can connect and become entangled
with the universe outside the brain.

CONSCIOUSNESS

If consciousness is a quantum process,
it may solve the mystery of what happens
during near-death experiences.

Let's say the heart stops beating,
the blood stops flowing,
the microtubules lose their quantum state.
But the quantum information which is in the microtubules,
isn't destroyed.
It can't be destroyed.
It just distributes and dissipates
to the Universe at large.
If the patient is resuscitated, revived,
this quantum information can go back into the microtubules,
and the patient says, "I had a near-death experiences,
"I saw white light. I saw a tunnel. I saw my dead relatives.
I may be even floated out of my body."
Now, if they're not revived and the patient dies,
then it's possible that this quantum information
can exist outside the body,
perhaps indefinitely as a soul.

Many scientists find it difficult to believe
that the soul is a quantum computer,
hard-wired into the cosmos.

The simplest definition of consciousness --
that which goes away when you fall into dreamless sleep.
But the fact of the matter is,
the brain doesn't shut off at all.
The neurons, the nerve cells, are actually just as active,
in a sense, as they are when you are awake.
So, it is an interesting scientific question.
How would it be, then,
that you disappear when your brain is still there
and buzzing along?

... Now that Brady is asleep,
we are going to ring the bell again
and see how his brain responds when -- after falling asleep.
Once again, the brain lights up.
But this time, there is no reverberation.
The ring of the bell dies
as quickly as the pulse of magnetism shuts off.

The sleeping brain may be active,
but it has lost the ability to share information
between one part of the brain and another.

Tononi believes this spreading of information
is the key ingredient of consciousness.

In 1907, Dr, Duncan MacDougall determined
that the soul weighs about 3/4 of an ounce,
or 21 grams.
He determined this by weighing the bodies of dying TB patients.

Your body produces 1 billion new cells every hour.
No matter how old you are,
most of you is no more than 10 years old.

Religion tells us that our soul transcend the body.
These are just shells that we walk a around in for a while.
Most scientists don't believe that.
They say that what we call the soul
is a self-aware network of brain connections
that evolved over million of years.

Biology + Technology

"This is a hybrot --
a robot controlled by living brain tissue.
Its brains are in a refrigerator,
but you can see its neurons react on the computer screen
as its body finds its way around the lab bench."

Is the soul nothing more than a network of neural processes,
something that one day can be recreated in a machine?

When you lose consciousness, you lose you soul.
You lose everything.
The world does not exist anymore for you.
Your friends dont exist anymore. You don't exist.
Everything is lost.

... mind or consciousness seems to fucntion without the physical body.

FREEMAN: "Perhaps some things really are too big for humans to grasp.
That's when we have to shift from what we know
to what we believe."
