Are There Parallel Universes

ARA THERE PARALLEL UNIVERSES
[THROUGH THE WORMHOLE]
Season 2

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1513168/

EXCERPTS:

There's something evil
lurking out in the cosmos.
It's called antimatter.
If one tiny drop of it
met a drop of normal matter,
it would explode with more force
than the bomb at Hiroshima.
The frightening reality
is that the Big Bang should have
created antimatter and matter
in equal amounts.
In other words, out there,
there should be an antimatter
twin to our Universe
with the power to
annihilate all creation.
There's just one problem.
Thid deadly antimater universe
has gone missing.

Is There An Edge to the Universe

IS THERE AN EDGE TO THE UNIVERSE
[THROUGH THE WORMHOLE]
Season 2 Ep. 2

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1513168/

Excerpts:

So, one problem with an infinite universe
that's not just infinite in space
but also infinite in time --
has no beginning --
you have an infinite number of stars.
So the sky would be just completely covered in white,
bright, bright -- so bright that it would fry you.
... So this tells us something.
It tells us we don't live in an infinite universe
that's infinitely old.

13 billion years ago
is the next thing that we we've managed to image,
and it is the after-glow on the Big-Bang.
It's called the cosmic microwave background,
and it's a picture of the way the Universe looked
about 400,000 years after the Big Bang.

... Sop we can't see any further back,
just as we can't see into the Sun.
The cosmic mircrowave background
is a barrier that blocks our vision.
Behind it, there could be an edge.

DARK FLOW:
scientists have discovered a mysterious dark flow of galaxies
all veering off to one side of our universe.

Is There Any Sixth Sense

[THROUGH THE WORMHOLE]

Is There Any Sixth Sense
EXCERPTS

Inner Consciousness
[layer by layer]

Global consciousness

Global Consciousness Project

Roger reasoned that if one person sitting close by
could alter their readouts,
then perhaps the mass thoughts of entire cities
could do the same.

Could Random-Number Generators placed around the world
be used to track the minds of millions of individuals?

What we have done is set up a scientific experiment
with a fairly simple hypothesis.
The idea is,
when large numbers of people share a consciousness state,
especially emotional,
then our network will show deviations from randomness.

Morphic Field

The sixth sense is effectively
the ability to detect information at a distance --
that's one f the definitions --
through mechanisms not known to date.

The experiment seems to show
that two brains in separate locations
can share a single experiences.

Human thoughts are not non-physical.
They are physical units of action potentials
from the nerve itself.

Can they be transmitted across space?
Under certain conditions, absolutely,
and there's evidence for it.

Cosmic Consciousness

Erwin Schrodinger,
one of the founders of quantum mechanics,
designed a thought experiment to drive home
the strange rule of his theory.

Let's say we put a cat and a vial of poison in a box.
We add an atom of radioactive uranium
and a Geiger counter.
if the uranium decays,
its sets off the Geiger counter,
which then releases the poison and silently kills the cat.
Before we open the box and look,
we can't actually know whether the uranium has decayed or not
since radioactive dacay
is a probabilistic quantum event.

Here's the question.
Is the cat dead or alive?
Well, according to quantum mechanics,
the cat is neither dead nor alive
but the sum of the two states.
Well, at that point, you say,
"Well, that's nonsense,
that's preposterous.
How can you be both dead and alive simultaneously?"

Schrodinger's cat was supposed to show
that NOTHING IN THIS UNIVERSE IS CERTAIN
UNTIL SOMEONE MAKES A MEASUREMENT.
But another pioneer of quantum mechanics,
Eugene Wigner,
believed it could teach us
something else about the working of the universe --
that consciousness controls everything.

Winger said, "Let's take it one step farther.
"If I, a human being, looks at the cat,
I am conscious.
Therefore, consciousness determines existence."
At that point, Einstein went ballistic
and said, "What?"
"You're saying that the fact that you are a conscious being
determines the fact that the cat is alive?"
The answer is yes,
and Wigner made one more step.
and that is,

"How do I know I'M ALIVE?"

You see, the cat and me, we're part of the same universe.
If i don't know the cat is alive or dead,
I could also be dad at the same time
and not even know it.
So, who detemines that I'm alive?

Well, Wigner's friend looks at me,
I look at the cat,
and we exist.
But then who looks at Wigner's friend?
And there's an infinte chain of people looking at people
looking at people until, finally, you hit cosmic consciousness.

Some consciousness that's ethereal,
that envelops the Universe,
which looka at us and says,
"Aha, the cat is alive."

Wigner believed that conscientiousness
is an inextricable part of reality,
THAT NOTHING REALLY HAPPENS IN THE PHYSICAL WORLD
UNLESS A CONSCIOUS MIND OBSERVE IT.

PRESENTIMENT

Can We Live Forever

CAN WE LIVE FOREVER
[THROUGH THE WORMHOLE]
Morgan Freeman
S02E08

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1513168/

EXCERPTS:

Can We Live Forever

"In just the past 200 years,
the average life-span has doubled
from about 40 to almost 80 years."

One of the iron laws of physics
is the second law of thermodynamics,
which says that everything rusts,
everything decays, falls apart.
We're all made out of atoms,
and these atoms in turn,
obey the second law of thermodynamics.

Anything and everything in the universe
has the tenancy to go from order to disorder.
And once the damage is done,
it's extremely difficult to reverse things and un-mix them.
It's a process known as entropy.

CRYOPRESERVATION
(Preserving the organs)

The goal of this team at biotech outfit 21st Century Medicine
is to freeze human organs and tissues
so that they can be revived,
undamaged, centuries from now.

Cryopreservation is the preservation of living systems
at very low temperatures.

...biological glass -- a technique he calls vitrification.

VITRIFICATION

Vitrification is the formation of a glass.
So if you take water and you mix it with various chemicals
in high-enough concentrations of chemical
and then cool it down to low temperaturs,
the system will never freeze no matter how low you go.

So if you cool to below that glass-transiton temperature,
our calculation indicate you can store a system
for tens of thousand of years.

Imagine being able to put your body on ice
and then being revived 10,000 years from now.
You could wake up and find yourself
in an age when science has made immortality possible.

Science and Religion:

We're taught to think of science and religion
as separate truths.
Albert Einstein didn't believe that.
He said, "Science without religion is lame.
Religion without science is blind."
The secret to achieving immortality
could reuire the fusion of humanity and God
into an everlasting cosmic computer.

Frank predicts that,
at some point in our evolution,
something truly remarkable will happen.
Humanity, the Universe, and God will unite --
a moment he calls the OMEGA POINT.

The Omega Point is the very end of the Universe.
In the process, mankind, or, more precisely, our descendants,
will expand out from this planet
and ultimately engulf the entire Universe.
As our descendants are moving into this final state,
their knowledge and their power and their computer capacity
is increasing without limit.

THE LAWS OF PHYSICS ALLOW A PROCESS THAT WILL CONVERT MATTER
... INTO PURE ENERGY.
THAT WILL BE THE ULTIMATE ENERGY SOURCE,
WHICH OUR DESCENDANTS WILL USE AND GAIN CONTROL OF IT.

We will be resurrected but we will never have to go through death again.

Frank claims the laws of physics
not only permit this type of immortality --
they actually require it to happen.

Second law of thermodynamics says
the complexity of the universe at the most fundamental level
is increasing without limit.
I conclude
that the validity of the second law of thermodynamics,
throughout all of time,
actually requires life
to come into existence to gain control of the Universe.

CLOCK OF THE LONG NOW.
It's designed to tick for 10,000 years.

10,000 years in the past we were still living in the Stone Age.
Flash forward the same period,
and our civilization and technology will be unrecognizable.

We realize in designing a 10,000-year clock
THAT THE MOST DURABLE DESIGN IS LIKELY THE SIMPLEST.
The clock of the long now will be ALL MECHANICAL.
[BINGO! So for a long term, even being in advanced in technology, we don't use it, because any big disaster -- storm of the sun, or whatever, can destroy everything. so we use more durable -- mechanical, technology. So in same process, our Ancient Civilizations, could have been also (to some extent) Advanced, much advanced than we consider them, but when they tried to give us a message -- a message to people of 10,000 years now, they used more durable techniques, like big stones, pyramids... and most of them are still mystery (watch Ancient Aliens series) how they made it, how they moved it, and how they did it... in short: when you programme (make) a thing which last longer, use a material which lasts longer. abro]
Power in the clock will come from the force of gravity.
A weight-driven system will turn a threaded bar.
And the clock will keep time
in both the short term, with the pendulum,
and in the long term, through a solar synchronizer.
This device may or may not last for 10 millennia,
but that's not really Alexander's point.

Are There More Than Three Dimensions

ARE THERE MORE THAN TREE DIMENSIONS
[THROUGH THE WORMHOLE]
Morgan Freeman
S02E04

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1513168/

EXCERPTS:

FOUR FORCES:
Physicists have discovered
that we live in a world governed by four primal forces.
There is electromagnetism,
the force that affects objects with electric charge...
The strong nuclear force,
whose power is unleashed in nuclear weapons,
and the weak nuclear force
that triggers radioactive decay.
These first three forces are all roughly equal in strength.
But the fourth force,
gravity,
is much weaker.
In fact, it's around a trillion, trillion, trillion times
weaker than the other three.

The idea that extra dimensions
might be a hidden part of our reality is as old as Plato.
He imagined the world we live in
to be like the wall of a cave lit by firelight.
Shadows dance across our two-dimensional world
cast by objects in the body of the cave
in a third dimension that's hidden from us.

Scientist are convinced dark matter exists
because it's affecting the way stars rotate around galaxies.
The gravitational pull of it is so strong,
that they estimate dark matter
outweighs normal matter by five to one.

Any particle that is moving must have energy,
and according to the most famous equation in all physics,
if you have energy, you have mass. [E=mc2]

Fermi (telescope) has already discovered a sea of gamma rays
emanating from the center of our galaxy.
But much more work is needed
to prove this signal is coming from the fourth dimension

The Fermi Telescope will continue gathering evidence
from the depths of space until around 2015.

STRING THEORY

String theory says that every single particle of matter
and energy in the Universe
is actually a tiny, vibrating string...
A string that vibrates not in three dimensions, but in nine.
If string theory is right, at every point in space,
there are six extra dimensions curled up incredibly tight.
These hidden dimensions could solve all the mysteries of physics.
But there's a problem.
Since string theory was first proposed over 40 years ago,
there's not a single shred of evidence to support it.

LHC - Large Hadron Collider
17 mile long curcular racetrack
designed to smash subatomic particles together.

... identified dozens of tiny subatomic particles,
the basic building blocks of matter.
But they've never seen the strings
that lie at the heart of each of these particles.
String theory predicts that they must be
a trillion, trillion times smaller than an atom.
Put that another way --
if an atom were the size of the solar system,
a string would be the size of a light bulb.
And the smaller an object is,
the more energy it takes to see it.

If you want to make a collider
that will actually produce something like strings,
it would take an accelerator much bigger than the LHC,
much bigger than the Earth,
the circumference of the Earth,
possibly much bigger than the Milky Way.

THE MORE DIMENSIONS THERE ARE,
THE FASTER THE FORCE OF GRAVITY CHANGES WITH DISTANCE.

But if her experiment is successful,
she'll create something never before seen on Earth --
a black hole.

Maria: It is quite possible the LHC experiment
can produce the so-called microscopic black holes.

But don't worry about moving to Mars just yet.
The black holes Maria and her colleagues expect to create
are tiny...
so tiny that they will evaporate in a fraction of a second.

Parallel Universe:

As gravitons move from the dense-gravity brane to our brane,
they spread out, and their force gets far weaker.

Things get rescaled
as you go from one place in an extra dimension to the other.
so whereas things might be extremely heavy here,
they could be exponentially lighter here,
which would naturally explain why gravity is so weak.

Lisa Randall's idea of a warped fourth dimension
separating us from a parallel universe,
where gravity is just as strong as the other foces of nature,
has set the world of physics alight.

Einstein realized that gravity could be seen
as simply a bending of space by massive objects.
His theory of general relativity
was a masterpiece of modern physics.
But it left a serious problem unsolved --
how does gravity affect space on the microscopic level?

... then you need an extension of Einstein's theory
because it doesn't cover that range.

Only One Dimension:
In water, ink spread into three dimensions.
On a piece of blotting paper, it spread into two.
But when Renate tested how things spread out
inside her computer-simulated universes,
the result looked something like this.
Watch what happens now.
It filled out much less volumes than we expected
on small scales,
and that's a sure indication
that the dimension's actually smaller than
what we expected.
It's smaller than three.

Renate's simulations
looked like they had three dimensions,
but at root, they only had one.

The space appears to have a smaller and smaller dimension
as you explore it on smaller and smaller scales.

Does Time Really Exist?

DOES TIME REALLY EXIST?
[THROUGH THE WORMHOLE]
Morgan Freeman
S02E03

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1513168/

EXCERPTS:

In 1884,
a world conference decided that the Meridian Line
that passes through the observatory at Greenwich
was to be the initial meridian -- the master time for planet Earth.
Greenwich Mean Time is our best approximation of time
as described by Sir Isaac Newton.

Newton believed the Universe was like a giant clock
set into motion by God.
But Newton got it wrong.

Newton's concept of time was that IT WAS ABSOLUTE.
... the problem with this is that it's actually impossible
for any of us to detect absolute time.
We don't detect absolute time.

We detect time as relationships between things that happen.

This was the great insight of Einstein, and it was the basis of his general Theory of Relativity --
that time is created by the relationships of the changes that happen in the Universe,
and nothing else.

Freeman: Even today some people have a hard time accepting
Albert Einstein's relational time
over Isaac Newton's absolute time.
But the better we get at telling time,
the more we can see that Einstein was right.

This is the aluminum ion experimental clock
at the National Institute of Standards and Technology
in Boulder, Colorado, America's official timekeepers.
It's the world's most accurate clock,
measuring the oscillations of supercooled atoms.
It keeps time to withing one second every 3.7 billion years.

In 2010, Bouler's time lords
took two ion clocks side by side
in perfect synchronization,
then moved one of the clocks up 12 inches.
THE HIGHER CLOCK WENT OUT OF SYNC.
IT BEAT JUST A TINY BIT FASTER THAN THE LOWER CLOCK,
because the higher clock is just a tiny bit farther away
from the gravitation pull of the Earth,
which slows things down.

Einstein
Space-Time, Four Dimensions
(further).. that gravity is a manifestation of the curvature of space-time.

relativity of time: such as time running faster for astronauts
than people on Earth.

The older we get,
the faster the currents of time seem to carry us along.
Our relationship to time changes as we age.

Studies show that the passage of time
seems to increase by the square root of your age.
So, if at 10 year old, it's 1:1,
when you're 20, it's 1:1.4.
And by the time you're 60, it's 1:2.44,
about 2 1/2 times faster.

Freeman: It takes a few millionths of second
for your brain to put together information
and serve it up to your consciousness,
which means that we're all living a tiny bit in the past.
This time delay is the tradeoff our brains make
to give us the best story of what happened.

Your Personal Time:
This man perceived the world as having accelerated.
in reality, he had slowed down.
He walked and talked in slow motion.
He had become unstuck in time.
It turned out that his time sickness
was caused by a brain tumor.
[Time Sickness / Schizophrenia]

Whatever time is,
it's deeply wired into us.
We are all clocks with our own internal time.

Time is Illusion:
Declaring that time is an illusin
may sound radical,
but the denial of time is an old idea --
2500 years old.

In 500 BC the philosopher Parmenides
declared that motion is impossible
because for an object to move any distance,
it would have to pass through an infinite series
of fractional steps to get from one place to another,
and no one can take infinite steps.
And if motion is impossible, then change is also impossible.
So, therefore, time must be an illusion.

Freeman: Our brains assemble these frozen moments
and play them in our minds
the same way that still photographs
played at 24 frames per second
make the images you're watching now seem to move.
But nothing is moving.
What we call "time" is an illusion.

Barbour: In some very deep sense,
the Universe, the quantum universe,
is just static.
Nothing changes.

Freeman: And according to Julina (Barbour) all of these snapshots of the Universe
exist simultaneously.
If i were to say that my yesterday no longer exists,
it would be like the number 13 saying that 11 has died.

This moment is eternal.

Julian Barbour believes space is all there is and time is an illusion.
Tim says Julian has got it all wrong.
We need time, but we don't need space.

Freeman: Did space come first...
Or did time come first?

Lee Smolin believe that time is older than the Universe --
it was here before the Big Bang,
and it will be here after the Universe ends.
[is time god?! asks abro]
And he thinks he can prove it by looking closely at how particles of light behave
over long distances.

... that light travels at 186,282 miles per second.
if time is an illusion, then this ill be true everywhere in the Universe,
no matter where we look.
But if time is real,
it's possible that the laws of physcis have changed
as the Universe has aged.

... physics has evolved since the Universe was born,
so time can't be an illusion.

... may be the speed of light is NOT Universal.

The Fermi Space Telescope is one such experiment.

ENTROPY:
[arrow of time]

As time goes on in the Universe as a whole,
disorderliness, entropy goes up.

Since the explosive birth of the Universe,
the increase of entropy is the reason
why the pas is different from the future.

Can We Travel Faster Than LIGHT

CAN WE TRAVEL FASTER THAN LIGHT
[THROUGH THE WORMHOLE]
Season 2, Episode 7

http://science.discovery.com/tv/through-the-wormhole/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Through_the_Wormhole
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1513168/
http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/through-the-wormhole/

Excerpts:

CAN WE TRAVEL FASTER THAN LIGHT

"The closest star is about 25 trillion miles away.
The fastest spacecraft we have today
would take more than 10,000 years to get there.

The speed of light is 186,000 miles per second,
or 670 million miles per hour.
Nothing goes faster than the speed of light.
It really is the maximum speed limit
for everything in the Universe.

Light travels a million times faster than sound.
It's fast enough to circle the Earth seven times
in just one second.

The way it moves is different
from everything else in the Universe.

Light would be seen to be moving at the same speed
no matter what my car was doing.
You don't add the speed of light to the speed of the car.
The speed of light is always the speed of light.

MORE SPEED -> MORE ENERGY
MORE ENERGY -> MORE MASS
MORE MASS -> LESS SPEED

The energy it takes to accelerate
increases and increases
as you come closer to the speed of light.
If, in principle, you wanted to go the speed of light,
you need and infinite amount of energy
to accelerate you that fast.
Or you're gonna get more and more energy,
but you're not going to get that much more speed.

WARP DRIVE

Miguel's idea stems from another aspect
of Einstein's theory of relativity --
that the shape of space can be distorted by mass or energy.

A warp drive can only function
with a mysterious power source --
negative energy.
... (today) negative energy is just unproven theoretical concept.

WORMHOLE

In this two-dimensional analogy,
the opening of the straw is just a circle.
But, because we live in three dimensions,
the opening of the wormhole would actually be
like the interior of a bubble.

... And we've proven mathematically they're unstable.

The negative energy needed to keep a wormhole open
in inherently too unstable.
A man-made wormhole would collapse the instant
someone tries to step inside.

TELEPORTATION

We could turn our bodies into information
and send that information from place to place
at the speed of light.

Chris Monroe and Steve Olmshenk
are quantum physicists at the University of Maryland.
THEY ARE PIONEERS OF TELEPORTATOIN.

Entanglement.

Steve and Chris have successfully transferred
the information from one atom to the other.
In other words, they teleported the atom.

... but the real question
is whether we will ever by able to teleport teh state
of all the 7000 trillion trillon atoms in an entire person
from one place to another.

In Physics,
every force has a particle that carries it.
Electromagnetic force is carried by light, or photons.

The electromagnetic force keeps atoms glued together
with a constant exchange of photons
that bounce from the nucleus to its orbiting electrons.

When you look in one dircetion on the sky,
the strength of the electromagnetic force
appears to decrease with increasing distance from us,
and when you look in exactly the opposite direction on the sky,
the converse is true.
The strenght of electromagnetism
seems to increase as you move to greater distance.

Electromagnetism is the force that is transmitted by light.
So if the strength of electromagnetism
is not constant,
it means that the PROPERTIES OF LIGHT ITSELF ARE CHANGING.

Once the laws of physics are allowed to vary in those equations,
THINGS HAVE TO BE REWRITTEN.
So its' back to the drawing board
for certain fundamental principles in physics.

HOMOGENEITY PROBLEM

FREEMAN: We are still a long way from becoming citizens of the cosmos.
The stars remain almost unimaginably far away.
... And, one day, we will reach it,
because what man can imagine, man can do.

Is There Life After Death

IS THERE LIFE AFTER DEATH
[THROUGH THE WORMHOLE]
Season 2, Episode. 01

http://science.discovery.com/tv/through-the-wormhole/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Through_the_Wormhole
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1513168/
http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/through-the-wormhole/
http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/through-the-wormhole-is-there-life-after-death/

EXCERPTS:

Quantum theory claims that every single point in space,
even empty space, can contain information.

This means the information in the micro-tubules
can connect and become entangled
with the universe outside the brain.

CONSCIOUSNESS

If consciousness is a quantum process,
it may solve the mystery of what happens
during near-death experiences.

Let's say the heart stops beating,
the blood stops flowing,
the microtubules lose their quantum state.
But the quantum information which is in the microtubules,
isn't destroyed.
It can't be destroyed.
It just distributes and dissipates
to the Universe at large.
If the patient is resuscitated, revived,
this quantum information can go back into the microtubules,
and the patient says, "I had a near-death experiences,
"I saw white light. I saw a tunnel. I saw my dead relatives.
I may be even floated out of my body."
Now, if they're not revived and the patient dies,
then it's possible that this quantum information
can exist outside the body,
perhaps indefinitely as a soul.

Many scientists find it difficult to believe
that the soul is a quantum computer,
hard-wired into the cosmos.

The simplest definition of consciousness --
that which goes away when you fall into dreamless sleep.
But the fact of the matter is,
the brain doesn't shut off at all.
The neurons, the nerve cells, are actually just as active,
in a sense, as they are when you are awake.
So, it is an interesting scientific question.
How would it be, then,
that you disappear when your brain is still there
and buzzing along?

... Now that Brady is asleep,
we are going to ring the bell again
and see how his brain responds when -- after falling asleep.
Once again, the brain lights up.
But this time, there is no reverberation.
The ring of the bell dies
as quickly as the pulse of magnetism shuts off.

The sleeping brain may be active,
but it has lost the ability to share information
between one part of the brain and another.

Tononi believes this spreading of information
is the key ingredient of consciousness.

In 1907, Dr, Duncan MacDougall determined
that the soul weighs about 3/4 of an ounce,
or 21 grams.
He determined this by weighing the bodies of dying TB patients.

Your body produces 1 billion new cells every hour.
No matter how old you are,
most of you is no more than 10 years old.

Religion tells us that our soul transcend the body.
These are just shells that we walk a around in for a while.
Most scientists don't believe that.
They say that what we call the soul
is a self-aware network of brain connections
that evolved over million of years.

Biology + Technology

"This is a hybrot --
a robot controlled by living brain tissue.
Its brains are in a refrigerator,
but you can see its neurons react on the computer screen
as its body finds its way around the lab bench."

Is the soul nothing more than a network of neural processes,
something that one day can be recreated in a machine?

When you lose consciousness, you lose you soul.
You lose everything.
The world does not exist anymore for you.
Your friends dont exist anymore. You don't exist.
Everything is lost.

... mind or consciousness seems to fucntion without the physical body.

FREEMAN: "Perhaps some things really are too big for humans to grasp.
That's when we have to shift from what we know
to what we believe."
